Navigating Your High Risk Pregnancy: What to Do When You're Feeling Down

 

Do you ever have those days when you just feel down?

 

You're not depressed exactly, though it feels like it's headed in that general territory if you don't change something.

 

It's also not quite sadness though you do feel sad sometimes. And it's not physical exhaustion though you feel so tired.

 

You go through the motions of the day just not quite fully there.

 

You're just....down.

 

I've been there.

 

Heck, some days I'm still there.

 

Reminders of my pregnancy and NICU stay are becoming fewer and fewer but they haven't gone away completely.

 

Having a high-risk pregnancy means you're running a marathon in dense fog.

 

You can't see how many people are by your side cheering you on. (Tweet that!)

 

You wonder if loved ones even remember you're on this long journey.

 

Will anyone be at the finish line whenever you make it there?

 

What's worse is you can't tell where the finish line is.

 

How much farther do you have to go? No one knows.

 

Some days you feel like you're running out of steam and you want to just stop.

 

But you're not ready for the finish line to be near. Your baby's not ready either. 

 

So you keep running. Or walking. Some days it feels like you're flat out crawling. But you keep moving.

 

You do it for your baby. 

 

You do it all for that little miracle that's giving you the inspiration and motivation to lie in bed for one more day, to take the shots for one more day, to sacrifice every aspect of your life for one more day.

 

For those moments that you feel beat down, wondering how you'll ever make it to the next moment try this:

 

Close your eyes, take a deep breath and put your hands on your belly.

 

Feel the sensations in your body. Even if you can't feel your baby move yet, notice how your body has changed because of the pregnancy.

 

Clear your mind and connect with the little person inside of you who you're fighting for.

 

Remind yourself to take it one day, one breath at a time. You can do this.
